Co-manufacturing / Operations

We are looking for a Co-manufacturing Lead who is passionate about combining materials science, technology and sustainability, to join Biophilica in London as we scale-up and collaborate with some of the world’s largest and most recognisable brands.

You will be an integral part of the team, partnering closely with the Founder & CEO, as well as with external partners, to manage a dynamic range of tasks from co-manufacturing negotiations, to manufacturing process mapping, and management of raw materials. We are seeking an organised and solutions-oriented person, comfortable with the rhythms of a science-based startup.

The role

Based in London, we are looking for an experienced Co-manufacturing Lead to support the next stage of growth at Biophilica. Working with our Founder & CEO, you will build relations with manufacturing sites, equipment suppliers, and raw material producers, including:

  • Evaluate new co-manufacturing partners and oversee the negotiation discussions.

  • Ensure that Biophilica’s needs in terms of material development and production capabilities are in line with the co-manufacturing site offering

  • Ensure that production efficiency is maintained during the process, including sourcing, while also considering all stakeholder needs

The area of responsibility for this role is very wide and thus requires flexibility, experience, and problem-solving. The ideal candidate must be competent and able to plan and adapt to unexpected changes across different kinds of industry requirements. They must be an excellent leader who can discover the most efficient, effective, and sustainable ways to scale-up the material production as we grow.

Key responsibilities

  • Further formulate scale-up strategy with the executive team

  • Build relationships with co-manufacturing partners including sourcing locations, evaluating partnership requirements, negotiations, relationship management

  • Implement quality assurance/quality control procedures alongside production team

  • Evaluate and manage operational risk (staffing, process, supply chain, ordering, etc.)

  • Ensure compliance with local and international laws for production and transport

  • Oversee expenses and budgeting to enable optimisation of production costs

  • Report on operational and production trials and lead improvements

  • Secondary responsibilities

  • Supply chain evaluation, negotiation, and management to then be implemented by the team (equipment, ingredients, samples, material orders, etc.)

  • Review of policies, processes, and standards for our process engineer to implement

  • Motivate teams to increase productivity and engagement

What you need for the role

  • Proven industry experience in relationship building for co-manufacturing, operations and project management

  • Organisational and leadership abilities

  • Negotiation skills

  • Knowledge of local and international legal requirements

  • Knowledge of workplace and operational laws, regulations and guidelines

  • Communication, motivational, and strong people skills

  • In-depth knowledge of diverse business functions and principles (e.g. supply chain, finance, customer requirements, health and safety, etc.)

  • Working knowledge of performance/operation metrics

  • Experience in manufacturing of coated textiles or continuous production lines for a film is a plus.

  • BSc in engineering, manufacturing and/or business administration or relevant field; MSc/MBA is a plus.

Materials Science or Engineering Internships

We are looking for interns in materials science and engineering who are passionate about combining materials science and sustainability to join Biophilica in London as we scale up and collaborate with recognisable brands. You will be working closely with the team, including conducting experiments, testing samples, and analysing data.

We are seeking candidates that:

  • Are organised, motivated, and solutions-oriented with attention to detail, who are comfortable with the rhythms of a science-based startup

  • Have previous experience from labs - commercial and/or academic

  • Have a passion for green chemistry, biomaterials and a creating a positive impact on the environment

  • Ideally have experience writing SOPs and risk assessments

  • Have experience of using testing equipment (tensile, flex, rub etc)

  • Can work efficiently, both independently and in a team
